What is the story of Ascension?
Ascension day is a Christian holiday and a foundation of the Christian faith. The word “ascension” means “going up”. According to the story told in the Bible, lord Jesus ascended (went up) to heaven. This was seen by his apostles. The holiday is celebrated forty days after Jesus’ resurrection. The story tells that Jesus’ human body went to heaven and that in heaven he sits on the right-hand side of God the Father. The feast has been celebrated 40 days after Easter in both Eastern and Western Christianity since the 4th century. Prior to that time, the Ascension was commemorated as a part of the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The ascension was Jesus’ final step in defeating death, making eternal life possible (Hebrews 6:19–20).
Jesus Christ’s Ascension into Heaven is one of the most important stories in the Bible. It is full of symbolism and meanings, showing that Jesus was more than human.
The Ascension of Jesus Christ is a story about his ascension into heaven when he was resurrected from the dead. He went up to heaven after his resurrection (Mark 16:19). He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. This may mean that he was lifted above the earth by two angels dressed in white robes who stood beside them and asked why they were looking into the sky. The angels said: This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:9). At the Resurrection, Jesus appeared and said to Mary Magdalene “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brothers, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
When we look at what happened during Jesus’ ascension, we can see how much he loved his people and how much he wanted them to know him as their savior. He wanted them to know how much he loved them and how great an act it was for him to die on the cross so they could be forgiven of their sins.
